For simple shapes, Inkscape's auto-trace often does well.

Then you could use Inkscape, (a free vector program,) to attempt an auto-trace of the image. You could also just use a screen capture program. png, or failing that you could just use the print screen button on your keyboard to copy a snapshot of the screen to the clipboard of the art and use a raster program, (like gimp or paint,) to paste into, crop, (if needed,) and save.
You would need to save the file as a raster or bitmap image, say. Having said that, and since you have an xmas deadline approaching soon, I will suggest a less than optimal solution that might work out just fine. From what I gather most of the shapes are simple shapes as one would expect going to a cutter. I have read about and conversed with people about Silhouette Studio. I feel your disgust that the newer version doesn't do something needed that the older version did. If you wish to open another SVG file into the same workspace, click File - Merge.To open one SVG, click File - Open and choose the SVG file.To open your SVG in Silhouette you have two options. You must have the Silhouette Studio Designer Edition software to open SVG files. You can open your Silhouette Cameo or Portrait and use your very own SVG file. Set the Image Location Option to Embed and click OK.We want to embed the artwork into the SVG. The Link option will save a copy of the graphic as a separate file, which is not very helpful. If you are making a print and cut SVG file, the graphic needs to be saved in the SVG file. When the SVG Options dialog box opens, choose an option for the Image Location. When the dialog box opens, change the Format from the default Adobe Illustrator. Next click File - Save as again to save as the SVG file.ai format, just in case I need to make revisions. I like to save the image in the native Illustrator. From the Menubar, click File - Save as.When creating a print and cut file, put the cut path on a layer above the graphic. Any lines of another color or width will be printed as an image from your printer and ignored by the cutting machine. This combination tells the Silhouette not to print the line but to cut along the path. When drawing cut lines for the Silhouette R, the paths need to be set to.
